maori axe

The Maori people are a native Polynesian people of New Zealand. In Maori, the word Māori means “normal”, “simple” and “natural”. Their beautiful drawings and folk motifs can be seen in many places in the world, they are used to pattern many clothes, and make popular tattoos.

Not only a beautiful thing, but also a usable, powerful and efficient working tool at the same time.

The head of the axe is made of steel, hardened at the edge, it can be used in the same way as any modern axe. The handle is made in two types; from the lighter variety of ash and the darker brown from steamed beech. Both types of wood are very strong and great to use as an axe handle.

Maori motifs

Maori motifs can also be seen on the head and handle of the axe.

PikoruaPikorua

It is a symbol of family, love, togetherness and friendship. It is one of the most popular Maori symbols. It is also used in two and three screw form. It symbolizes the togetherness of two people or cultures, and a symbol of immortal, eternal love and endless friendship.

You can see this symbol on the handle of the axe. The end of the handle “twists” into this symbol. Because the twisting shape is larger and thicker than the gripping part, the axe will be stable and comfortable to grip, without slipping out of the user’s hand.

KoruKoru

It is the motif of renewal, rebirth and purity in Maui culture.

Koru is a spiral shape based on the appearance of a new unfolding silver fern. Its shape symbolizes eternal movement, while its inner part symbolizes eternal return to the beginnings. You can see this pattern on the head of the Maori ax, in the highlighted area, surrounded by other ornamental Maori-style motifs.

Hei MatauHei Matau

It is a symbol of strength, power and growth. This symbol indicates the importance of fishing for the Maori people and their relationship with the sea god Tangaroa. They also believe it helps prosperity, fertility and safe passage at sea.

This symbol was given a prominent place on the head of the axe, fitted to the curves of the pattern. But there is also this Hei Matau, or Maori hook symbol, on the handle of the ax. It can be seen carved under the head of the axe. If you use the axe for smaller carvings and hold it under the head, this symbol provides a very comfortable and effective grip on the handle.
